Lavender Dreams
Lavender has been cultivated since Roman times, used to scent baths and linens. It first appeared in Provence during the Middle Ages, valued for its olfactory and medicinal properties. In the 19th century, lavender farming expanded, supplying the perfumeries of Grasse with high-quality essential oils for the creation of fine elixirs.
The Luberon Lavender Road delights visitors with its vibrant colors and soothing fragrances. Explore tranquil villages, medieval castles, abbeys, vineyards, the striking ochres of Roussillon, and breathtaking landscapes. Learn the secrets of lavender through visits to fields, distilleries, and museums dedicated to essential oils. Lavender fields are plentiful in Sault, Bonnieux, Gordes, Roussillon, Oppède, and on the Claparade Plateau. The peak season runs from late June to the lavender harvest festival on August 15th.

Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey, near Gordes and at the foot of the Luberon massif, is the epitome of Cistercian architecture. Built in the 12th century, it reached its peak in the 13th and 19th centuries. The abbey once owned mills, herds, a hospital in Arles, and properties in Marseille, Carpentras, and Cavaillon. Still run by Cistercian monks, the visit reveals the pure lines of its church, cloister, dormitory, refectory, and more.
The Montmajour Abbey, founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks, is located on a hill near Arles and features pre-Romanesque and Romanesque buildings. Remnants of its early origins include the semi-troglodyte St-Pierre chapel built under a rock. The Romanesque parts, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, include the abbey church, monks' quarters, and an extraordinary cloister with statues, bas-reliefs, and columns adorned with 48 sculpted capitals. A 14th-century keep adds a military touch, while an 18th-century monastery introduces a neoclassical style.
